History

The establishment of the today's Institute of Communications Engineering goes back to the year 1956. The Institute of Telecommunications and High-frequency Engineering was founded under the line of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Franz Heinrich Lange. Current topics of underwater acoustics and signal processsing are based on his fundamental research about theory of signals and systems and about correlation electronics. According to the further image the name of the institute in Institute of High-frequency Engineering and Measuring Electronics was changed in 1967. The Science Area of Information Technology arose from it in 1970. The main emphases of the research developed from the application of methods and procedures to the processing of interfered signals.

A new research line communications transmission engineering was earned by the union of the University of Rostock with the Engineer University for Navigation in 1991. With the foundation of the Engineer University in 1969 nautical and technical ship officers as well as radio officers were trained at the locations Warnemünde and Wustrow. Furthermore the Science Area of Marine Electronics / News Service, which formed a root of today's institute after the union, was developed here.

The Department of  Electrical Engineering and Information Technology and the Institute of Communications Engineering were founded from the two science areas in 1992. Director was Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Rainer Kohlschmidt till 2004. The teaching tasks of both areas were standardized and extended by the studies main emphasis Media Technology in 1995. The institute is carrier of the studies direction Communications Engineering. Main emphases of the education are Communications Engineering / Information Electronics and Media Technology. The institute initiated the lead-in of the course of studies Information Technology / Technical Informatics together with the Department of Informatics in 1998.

In 2006 the institute was renamed in Institute of Communications Engineering and is at present supported by three chairs:

Communications Engineering - Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Volker Kühn

Signal Processing and Virtual Acoustics - Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sascha Spors

Radio Communication - Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Tobias Weber.
